One year since famine was first confirmed in Sudan’s Zamzam camp in North Darfur, WFP warns that the families trapped inside the besieged state capital, El Fasher, face starvation.

WFP will be forced to suspend all emergency food and nutrition aid for 1.3 million people in northeast Nigeria at the end of July. This is due to critical funding shortfalls which come at a time of escalating violence and record levels of hunger.

WFP has reached over 2 million people with lifesaving assistance in South Sudan so far this year. However, a severe funding shortfall threatens ongoing support, placing millions at risk of losing aid.

WFP began airdropping emergency food assistance to thousands of families in South Sudan’s Upper Nile state, where surging conflict has pushed some communities to the brink of famine.

The population in two counties in South Sudan are at risk of famine in the coming months, as conflict in Upper Nile state escalates.

Laurent Bukera, WFP Sudan representative and country director, speaks on the hunger crisis in Sudan and the urgent need to scale up the humanitarian response.


Although it has made significant improvements in reducing poverty and chronic malnutrition, Mauritania’s rapidly growing population still faces major challenges including hunger, malnutrition, gender inequality and land degradation.

Despite overall economic growth, Tanzania still experiences food deficits due to a heavy reliance on subsistence farming which can’t keep up with the population.
