Background: Türkiye has a long and rich history dating back thousands of years. The modern Republic of Türkiye was established in 1923 and today serves as a bridge between Europe and Asia.
Geography & Climate: Türkiye’s landscape includes mountains, fertile plains and long coastlines along the Black, Aegean and Mediterranean seas. Its climate varies by region, with hot, dry summers along much of the coast and colder, snowier conditions in the country’s interior.
Economy: Türkiye has a large and diverse economy driven by manufacturing, agriculture and tourism. Despite its economic strength, many households face challenges from high inflation and rising living costs.
How WFP Supports People in Türkiye
The World Food Programme (WFP) has worked in since Türkiye 2012.
Earthquake Recovery
After the 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Türkiye in 2023, WFP focused on supporting the restoration of the food sector of the earthquake-affected areas, while revitalizing income-generating opportunities. WFP supports more than 1,000 food-related businesses, including smallholder farms, dairies and local markets. Through training, equipment, financing and market recovery efforts, WFP helps strengthen food systems and create economic opportunities for communities.
Refugee Support
WFP supports refugees in Türkiye through food assistance and cash-based programs that help families meet their daily needs with dignity. Working alongside the Turkish Red Crescent, WFP provides food e-vouchers and cash assistance to tens of thousands of refugees each month. Following the devastating 2023 earthquakes, WFP expanded support to displaced refugees through emergency cash assistance and continues to provide meals to Syrian returnees at border crossings.
Food Procurement and Transport
Türkiye is a key partner in WFP’s global humanitarian operations. Thanks to its strategic location and strong logistics network, WFP sourced more than $1.1 billion in food commodities from Türkiye between 2020 and 2024 to support emergency responses around the world. WFP also uses Türkiye’s infrastructure to store, process and transport humanitarian supplies, including critical assistance delivered to people in Syria.
