Economy: Somaliaβs economy is largely informal and pastoralist. Unemployment is widespread, and 54% of the population live below the poverty line.
Causes of Hunger
Conflict
Ongoing conflict throughout Somalia has been the primary cause of hunger, as it displaces millions of people and disrupts local economies and food supplies.
Learn More Drought
Somalia's arid desert environment makes it extremely prone to drought. This happens frequently, and consecutive years of low rainfall dry out crops and kill livestock.

1991-
The central government collapsed and resulted in internal conflict, causing widespread displacement, famine, and insecurity.

A severe drought caused extreme hunger. The country came close to famine, but was narrowly averted by WFP's emergency food assistance.
