Amid growing global hunger crises, donors can rush lifesaving meals via crypto

Washington, D.C. (April 8, 2025) — Amid growing hunger crises, shrinking global humanitarian budgets, and the rise of crypto philanthropy, World Food Program USA today announced it is now accepting over 80 types of cryptocurrencies—including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USD Coin — through a partnership with The Giving Block. Crypto offers donors a fast, secure and innovative way to support the World Food Programme (WFP)’s critical food assistance operations in more than 120 countries and territories.

“In the face of record-breaking need and shrinking resources, we must do more than ask—we must adapt,” said Dorota Amin, Chief Philanthropy and Partnerships Officer at World Food Program USA. “Cryptocurrency offers donors a powerful pathway to create impact right now.”

Today, nearly 2 million people are on the verge of famine and millions are dependent on WFP for their survival.  In response to an urgent funding shortfall warning from WFP recently, World Food Program USA launched the Emergency Hunger Relief Fund on March 31. The fund aims to raise more than $25 million in private sector and individual donor support in the United States to help fill funding gaps for WFP programs that provide lifesaving assistance to 58 million people on the brink of starvation. Support this effort with a crypto donation:

“Traditional aid systems are under immense pressure. Embracing new technologies like blockchain and cryptocurrency isn’t just a choice—it’s necessary,” Amin added. “By opening our doors to crypto donors, we’re tapping into a growing community of mission-driven individuals eager to create change.”

Crypto donations also offer a range of benefits for donors:

  • Lower transaction fees (as compared to credit card processing), ensuring more of every donation goes directly to those in need.
  • Tax advantages, including potential exemption from capital gains tax and eligibility for deductions at full market value.
  • Speed, with transactions processed in minutes, not days.

The move to accept cryptocurrency in donations builds on WFP’s longstanding leadership in blockchain innovation. Through its Building Blocks program, WFP uses blockchain technology to deliver aid directly to refugees via secure digital wallets — cutting transaction costs by up to 98%, reducing fraud and protecting personal data. The program also removes the need for local banks, speeding up the delivery of assistance during emergencies.
