EARTHQUAKE ROCKS COMMUNITIES IN Türkiye
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake has impacted families across Türkiye and Syria. The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is delivering emergency food assistance to communities that have been hit hardest by the quake.
Bordered by five countries, Türkiye hosts the largest refugee population in the world – including over 3 million Syrian refugees. Although most refugees live alongside the host population, there are still 45,000 living in camps located in the southeast close to the epicenter of the quakes.

How WFP Supports People in Türkiye
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has worked in since Türkiye 2012. In response to the devastating earthquake that struck Türkiye on February 6, the U.N. World Food Programme is supporting affected families.
From climate-related disasters to outbreaks of conflict, WFP is the world’s first responder. We can launch an emergency response within 72 hours to deliver assistance.
WFP is providing family food packages and hot meals. This food requires no cooking and provides immediate relief to families facing freezing winter temperatures.
Building on our successful soup kitchens initiative during the COVID-19 pandemic, WFP will provide food for kitchens to provide hot meals twice a day for at least two weeks.
