Cooperatives offer opportunities that smallholders could not achieve individually. Rome -- Smallholder farmers gain big benefits from agricultural cooperatives including bargaining power and resource sharing that lead to food security and poverty reduction for millions, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Program (WFP) stressed today on the occasion of the launch of the International Year of Cooperatives 2012 (IYC) in New York.
“The growing threat of food security in Niger is deeply worrying. The country appears to be heading towards a full-scale food crisis if early measures are not taken. Vulnerable families are still exhausted by the last crisis, barely a year ago, and they have little ability to confront another emergency.” Denise Brown, WFP Niger Country Director, Niamey.
The United Nations World Food Program expanded its partnership with USAID to support smallholder farmers in developing countries through its innovative Purchase for Progress (P4P) pilot program. The project was highlighted yesterday at a WFP USA award ceremony hosted by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that honored Bill Gates and Howard Buffett as pioneers of this program that addresses hunger at its core. The keynote at the event was delivered by Vice President Joe Biden.
WASHINGTON, D.C.--The Peace Corps joined the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP), and pledged to support and expand food security-related activities that will combat hunger in Peace Corps countries worldwide.

MOGADISHU The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) began the distribution of food assistance to hungry families in Somalia on Oct 12. The food was purchased using a US$16 million donation from China -- the country’s largest single donation to WFP humanitarian operations.
