We love getting to know our supporters and hearing the story behind their compassion and generosity. Meet Tina Hanson and her family, just a few of WFP USA's amazing, committed champions in the mission to end hunger. When asked why her family is helping WFP USA solve global hunger, Tina said, “we immigrated here. Growing up, we didn’t always have food on the table. I can’t imagine that 100 times over…Reading about hunger was so awakening.”
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Tina's 12-year-old daughter Isabel is in her school's humanitarian club and is passionate about international justice. Like the rest of her family, she is commited to making the world a better place. She sent us this letter along with her family's generous gift:
Dear World Food Programme,
Hello, my name is Isabel, and I’m 12 years old. I have realized that I can do so much. I can change the world if wanted to, but my question is: If I can, why isn’t anybody else. Terrible things are happening and if we don’t help out, it’s not going to get any better. There are so many bad things in the world we live in, and most people don’t even realize it. I realized that our generation is the best of all, because the children of our generation are willing to do so much and not for them, but for others. In conclusion, it’s really not about us, it’s about you, all the people who help these unfortunate kids, all the people who care about others, and all the people just like you.
It all started when my parents saw a movie called Blood Diamonds. Then there was the Charles Taylor trial and after that, my family decided to sell all the diamonds we have (except for the little ones in my mom’s wedding ring and such) and donate it. We came up to about 1,300 dollars from all of our diamonds. When my dad chose this organization to donate to, I was stunned. I realized that I am feeding about 5,200 meals to starving kids and women, I could not believe what I could do. I wish I could somehow thank everyone involved for creating this, this is truly amazing. The fact that you guys can save lives and bring smiles to kids all around the world is simply magic. So, in a way, you are all magicians performing to save the world, to give children hope, and to tell everybody else to pitch in. That is why I am writing you this letter, to say thanks for your wonderful trick.
Isabel and the rest of the Hanson family.
Thank you Isabel, Tina, Kevin and Emma. The world is a better place, thanks to you!
